Movie: HILMA

September 9, 2023 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

In 2019 the Guggenheim Museum in NYC presented the complete works of Hilma af Klint, the first major solo exhibition in the United States devoted to her work. Hilma died in 1944, unknown and unrecognized as the woman who invented abstract painting. The Guggenheim exhibit revolutionized the art world and art history, displacing Kandinsky, Malevich and Mondrian as the fathers of Modernism. Lasse Hallström’s HILMA brings to the big screen the life story of a woman who defied late nineteenth century conventions, when women were not allowed to attend art school with their male peers, and reveals the impetus behind her work, from the sudden death of her younger sister Hermina to the writings of Rudolph Steiner, and the strong influence of the Theosophic Movement and her belief in its mystical philosophy.  In English.  120 minutes. Tickets are $10 ($5 for Library & SCC Members) Click here for tickets
